What Do I Need To Think About To Choose The Right Shade?
Please read through the following information on exterior solar shade materials, guide systems, and exterior solar shade motorized options. By making an educated decision, you will have a product that will best serve your needs and be worth your investment. If you are having a professional install for you, they will help you through the simple decision making process.
Does it matter what kind or color of fabric I choose, as long as I like it?
When selecting a fabric for your patio or sunroom, you will want to keep in mind what you ultimately want to accomplish to make this area more enjoyable. Stop and think about: Is it the heat that is creating an issue? Is it the sun that is simply too bright and needs toning down? Do I want to maintain an excellent outward visibility? Keep in mind the following facts:
-
The darker the shade, the better outward visibility you will have because of decreasing the glare, at the same time you loose some of the reflective properties and will not reject as much solar energy.
-
By choosing a lighter shade, you will increase the solar energy rejection, but also have more light being reflected in and decreasing visibility.
-
All 9 fabric colors will come in a 3%, 5%, or 10% openness factor. The smaller the openness the more heat and light that will be rejected.

We have 3 different styles to choose from to fit your needs. We carry Sheerweave 4100 with a 10% openness, SW 4000 with a 5% openness and SW 4400 with a 3% openness. All fabrics are vinyl-coated yarn to withstand the outdoor climate and abuse that it can bring. Picture above on left has an Ebony color with 5% openness, fabric on right is the Alabaster with 3% openness. By looking at these it will help you to appreciate the difference between a darker fabric versus a lighter texture.

What Style Of Guide System Do I Need?
Depending on your area and how much of a breeze or outright wind you get will determine what guide system we would recommend. Below you will see the benefits and possible downsides to each selection, review your needs and area carefully before selecting.
-
Cable Guides:This system is very easy to install and will come with all the necessary instructions. This method has a cable run down each side of the screen and through the eye hole on the lumb bar at the bottom of the shade. If you are installing yourself, this guide system can be wall mounted or floor mounted at the bottom length of the shade, (notice picture below). If you want to control how far the shade is rolled up or down and only have slight breezes, then this cable guide system will work well.

-
Bottom Clips: We use this method more than all else, very effective in breezy areas and simple to install and operate. Here you will have the shade roll all the way down to it's lowest setting, the floor will have a small eye lit drilled and screwed into place with a quick release S-Biner to attach shade. Simply raise the shade at this point only about 1 inch to tighten shade and it will be firm enough to not be effected by any breezes. The shade can still be in any position, but when windy, it must be fully lowered to lock in place, or lifted all the way into it's housing for protection.
-
Shy-Zip System: By far, this is the best system on the market for any situation, but does carry a higher cost. The Shy-Zip System was developed for the bullet trains in Japan and can withstand up to 200 mph wind. As the shade is lowered it is zipped into a channel and held firm, giving you the flexibility to set the height to wherever you desire and not worry about it moving or being damaged. This method is easy to install but must be between two pillars for the side channels to be mounted. Further information can be seen on our Shy-Zip page. Listed below is the pricing for the Shy-Zip System. Back to top
What operating system will I need?
Depending on your needs and desires, we can supply you with 1 of 3: The least expensive of the 3 is to have a manually operated shade with a plastic beaded chain to adjust the height, 2nd is a crank operated system that comes with a handle and is very easy to operate as pictured below, or the 3rd choice is to have a 110 volt motor with a wall switch or hand-held remote. If you choose a motorized shade we always recommend that you order the shade and have it on hand before having an electrician come out to wire it in. All wiring is a simple 3 stage household wiring set-up and is very easy to do. The wireless hand-held remote is the easiest solution, but if you choose a wall switch, it will need to be wired in just like a light switch and then will send a radio transmission to the shade. (Pricing below)

Our exterior shades that are crank operated or motorized come in a housing to protect it from the elements and give it a clean cut appearance. Here you will see the housing and the selection of colors. These colors are also the selection for the fascia that will come with the chain operated shade.
| White | Vanilla | Bronze |
If you have a larger size than what is shown below, please email us and we will send you a quote along with any available options for that size shade.
Below is the pricing for the manually chain operated shades and can be selected with any of the 3 sheerweave's, 4000, 4100, or the 4400 displayed above. The area in gray will have a 3" Fascia and the black will require a 4" Fascia due to roll size. (Picture shows mechanism with the fascia) Back to top

The crank handles are an additional $24 each, only one is necessary for the operation of several shades. If you do not want a crank but would rather have it motorized, then simply add the price of the motor and remote listed below this chart to the price of the shade. (Motor will already be installed in shade when it arrives, you simply need to wire it or plug it in).
